Special Olympics kicks off summer games in Wake
Wake County will play host to the dreams of thousands of athletes as the 2011 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games kicks off Friday.
Posted — UpdatedNearly 1,400 athletes with physical and mental disabilities will compete in aquatics, track and field, gymnastics, power-lifting, softball and volleyball.
State Attorney General Roy Cooper will speak at the opening ceremonies at the Time Warner Cable Musical Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh Friday evening. Law enforcement officers will carry the torch as the finale to the North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
Competitions will take place throughout the weekend in Raleigh, Apex and Cary. Admission is free.
