Garner names police officer of the year

— The Garner Police Department on Tuesday named Sgt. Joe Binns its 2011 Officer of the Year.

Binns, a patrol sergeant, has been on the job 17 years. He has been a patrol officer, a drug prevention and education officer and served on the department's tactical team.

Officer Brian Lawrence and Platoon Leader Scott Selvek were finalists for the award.
