IMAX coming to Durham

Posted May 9, 2011

— The Triangle will get a third IMAX theater later this month when a new auditorium opens at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham.

The theater will open with the fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, “On Stranger Tides,” May 20 at 7 p.m.

The theater will hold up to 358 guests who can watch 3D movies from rocking seats on a screen that measures more than 62 feet across.

"The Triangle will get a third IMAX theater..."

Same here. The one in Raleigh we all know about. Evidently the one in Cary must not technically be a classic IMAX as I've seen ZERO advertisements about it. Odds are its undersized and overpriced.

Yes - the one at Southpoint is a new addition to the building, filling in space between the theater and the parking lot.

The Southpoint theater was originally designed to include an IMAX, but that part was shelved when the Raleigh IMAX was built first. There was a concern at the time about whether the Triangle could support more than one IMAX.

I don't think Southpoint's is a conversion. They built a HUGE addition on to the far side of the cinema building.

First one is in downtown Raleigh, second is in Cary at Crossroads theatre (they converted one of their movie screens) and Southpoint will also be a converted movie screen. Note that the "converted" screens aren't usually as big as the purpose-built IMAX screens like the one in downtown Raleigh.

Regal Crossroads Cinema in Cary apparently has an Imax theatre, but I can't imagine that it's as large as the one at Marbles...I don't remember there ever being any recent construction there and I doubt the screen would fit very well into even their largest theatre.

Maybe they're counting the one at the Discovery Center in Charlotte....

A THIRD Imax? I know about the one in downtown Raleigh. Where is the second one?
