North Carolina State University showed off its completely renovated University Club in a celebration gala Saturday.

The club has been an important fixture in Raleigh since it was built in 1959, according to a club spokesman. The renovations, which include updated interiors, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a new pool and a carriage porch, mark the completion of phase one of the club's "Bright Future Ahead" campaign.

"This club is something we can all be proud of," said Phil Jones, chairman of the building committee. "The new interior spaces and our expanded swim facilities position us as the place to go for Wolfpack families seeking a club, and for businesses and groups who need event space."

The grand opening celebration gala was Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for university leaders, local officials and media personalities.

The NCSU Club is a private, non-profit club for faculty, staff and alumni that is not part of the University. The building was originally constructed with funds donated by the Reynolds family. The renovation was completed with funding by the members and private donors, not the University.

So you are increasing my tuition and yet are making unnecessary renovations to this building, Talley, the Bookstore, and the Atrium. Can't these renovations wait until the economy is completely back up and running, more people have jobs, money is flowing freer, and professors and degree programs aren't being eliminated?

State, you are trying to teach your students to create better lives for themselves and the world around them. You aren't setting a good example by spending wasteful amounts of money on things that are not as important as a quality education.
