Downtown Raleigh parking deck opens

Posted January 24, 2011

— A new parking deck added 900 parking spaces in downtown Raleigh on Monday.

The deck is part of the Green Square development at McDowell and Jones streets. Another 400 parking spaces will open when the new wing of the Museum of Natural Sciences, named the Nature Research Center, opens later this year.

While employees of several state agencies are assigned to park in the deck, 110 hourly parking spaces will be available for visitors.

The $17 million deck features LED lighting, a 20,000-gallon cistern to collect rainwater for irrigating state property downtown, 23 electric car chargers, a design that maximizes natural lighting inside, energy-efficient elevators and devices to track energy consumption and gauge savings, officials said.

Boy, 17 MILLION, are you absolutely CrAzY ! I thought NC was broke ? I'm sure the project was started before the economy tanked..... but 17 MILLION for a parking deck ? Go Green is great but I bet the "green" features drove the price up 2 Million dollars. We need parking decks but, I would rather pay for regular ones since it comes directly out of my paycheck.

i would LOVE the chance to pay 300$ per year to park within 2 blocks of my work location downtown LOVE IT!

Insted the State gives us nothing for reimburment for parking which by the way thy are under NO obligation to provide to us as state employees.... isnt that special.

meanwhile behind the physad of this innocent looking bookstore.... mayor mclorrin wrapped up all the downtown parking and sold it off to 3rd party venders to police and made sure you have to go to hi wives family for a parking spot. and he gets re-elected why?

Hey SW, you must get all your exercise jumping to conclusions! State employees must pay for their parking spot. Most of the parking lots that were available in that area have new construction in them. Where do you expect them to park? Do you pay to park at your job?

State Employee assigned spaces - 790 (courtesy of the tax payers)
General public spaces - 110 (available for a nominal fee)
23 of which are designated for the 2 people who have electric cars.
