A group of mothers from the Outer Banks is appealing to "First Mother" Michelle Obama in order to raise awareness about safety concerns about the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet.
The group plans a letter-writing campaign outlining the age and condition of the bridge and asking Obama to intervene to hasten bridge repair or replacement.
The bridge is the sole access road to Hatteras Island and serves an estimated 5,000 vehicles per day.
The "Bridge Moms" are collecting letters through Aug. 10, 2010, and have even set up a Facebook page to get the word out.
