'Bridge Moms' appeal to Obama for help with Hatteras bridge

e-mail print friendly

A group of mothers from the Outer Banks is appealing to "First Mother" Michelle Obama in order to raise awareness about safety concerns about the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet.

The group plans a letter-writing campaign outlining the age and condition of the bridge and asking Obama to intervene to hasten bridge repair or replacement.

The bridge is the sole access road to Hatteras Island and serves an estimated 5,000 vehicles per day.

The "Bridge Moms" are collecting letters through Aug. 10, 2010, and have even set up a Facebook page to get the word out.

It really is in bad condition. The Herbert C Bonner bridge is ranked a 2 out of a 100 with a 100 being the best! The bridge collapse in 2007, the bridge was ranked a 50! This is definitely NOT media-hype! We need to word to get out! We need the bridge replaced NOW!! The paper shuffle for permits and continued "environmental studies" must stop before the bridge collapses with a school bus full of children on it! The funding is there! We don't need money! We just need the beaurocratic circus show to STOP and the permits to be signed so that we can get the bridge built now!!

I know the bridge is old but is it really in such bad condition, or is that just media hype?
