CAMERON, N.C. — Two groups from the Tar Heel state marked Independence Day in the nation's capital.

The marching band from Union Pines High School in Moore County and the equestrian drill team from Equestrian Arts Institute in Mebane participated in America's National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

A national selection committee judges participants on quality with an eye towards selecting at least one representative from each state.

The 150 members of the Union Pines band spent the weekend in Washington, D.C., seeing the sites and watching the musical and fireworks display on the national Mall.
