The SPCA of Wake County set an adoption record with its Independence Day Adopt-A-Thon. More than 115 animals found new homes over the past 48 hours, spokeswoman Monday Lamb said.

The shelter, on Petfinder Lane in Raleigh, was offering pets for adoption for just $17.76 in honor of Independence Day.

The fee includes spay or neuter surgery, a microchip and vaccines for each animal. It is a significant savings over the usual cost, which ranges from $70 to $115.

Lamb said an additional 24 animals had been reserved during the event and were expected to be adopted Tuesday.
