— North Carolina Central University marked its centennial Saturday evening with a gala at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Branford Marsalis and other musicians, including the NCCU Jazz Ensemble, provided the entertainment.

Chancellor Charlie Nelms saluted the university's founding by and for African-Americans saying, "NCCU has gone far beyond those humble roots, and now educates people from across the globe and of every ethnic origin."
