Culinary students and chefs from across the state submitted 61 entries – 50 student entries and 11 professional entries – for the event, which benefits the Wake Tech Arts Fund. (Check out some of the cakes in the competition.)

Tuesday's event also featured a live cake-decorating challenge where 10 chefs had two hours to decorate their cakes, which will then judged by a professional group of pastry chefs.

Jennifer Nichols won first place and $300 for her entry "Memories of the Season." Memories of her favorite holidays and family camping vacations helped inspire her creation.

"Things that I remember as a kid, and I hope my kids have the same memories when they grow up," Nichols said.

The People's Choice award went to Courtney Leckey for her cake shaped like Kermit the Frog.

"It's childhood memories and so we figured everybody loves the muppets, and that Kermit was the most loveable of all the muppets," Leckey said.

Wow, I would have loved to go that....It's a shame it wasn't more widely publicized :(

I had the chance to go and it was wonderful! The student cakes were amazing. There were also sugar sculptures and other culinary displays. And for the $10 admission you received 5 'food' tickets which you could have used to taste the cakes!

In the past, I have also complained that the notice was very short but this year I caught a few people taking about it so I was prepared.

I thought the story would be about one of those stupid shows on Food Network like Ace of Cakes or Cake Challenge or something like that - I might consider going to that - I am not much into those shows - in fact I never even watch them, especially Ace of Cakes - they are SO weird!

This story was on the site this morning without pictures. And I remember seeing it on TV over the weekend as a community event item. So there was prior notice.

I'm 28.5 weeks pregnant and would have appreciated it if this was posted sooner so I could attend and eat until I puke.

The ONLY way I would pay $10 to see that is if I got to taste all of the entries.
