Tobacco Road Marathon held in Cary

Runners on Sunday morning took part in the first annual Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon in Cary.

CARY, N.C. — Runners on Sunday morning took part in the first annual Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon in Cary.
The race began at Brooks Park in Cary, but more than 20 miles were on the American Tobacco Trail.

Gavin Coombs of Clayton won the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Kristi Arledge of Simpsonville won the women's race in 2 hours and 58 minutes.

Erik Johnson of Hillsborough won the men's half marathon with a time of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Molly Nunn of Winston-Salem won the women's half marathon with a time of 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Rails to Trails Conservancy and the Wounded Warriors Project.

Organizers also donated $5,000 to the WRAL Haiti Relief Fund.
