FOUR OAKS, N.C. — A seventh-grader at Four Oaks Middle School collected hundreds of stuffed animals for children in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

Ashton Makey got motivated after seeing "so many lost and traumatized children on TV who appeared to have nothing," Johnston County Schools spokeswoman Terri Sessions said in a release Thursday.

Ashton started a toy collection drive called Healing Haiti and collected 403 stuffed animals. She gave them to the 82nd Airborne Division to be distributed in Haiti.

The 82nd Airborne awarded Ashton a certificate recognizing her volunteer service and support to the unit's mission.
