<b>TARBORO, N.C.</b> — Steve Mazingo, the recently retired superintendent of the Greene County public school system, will serve Edgecombe schools on an interim basis while a replacement is being found for outgoing Superintendent Craig Witherspoon, the board of education announced Monday night.

Witherspoon is leaving in mid-March to lead the Birmingham City Schools in Alabama.

Mazingo will begin visiting schools and meeting with staff in the coming weeks in order to facilitate the transition.
