Former WRAL reporter dies

A television news trailblazer passed away Tuesday.

Oscar Smith, 79, was the first black reporter for WRAL-TV. He started at the station in March 1972.

After leaving the station, he held positions in state government and was most recently was a columnist for The Carolinian newspaper.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

    It's been nearly 40 years since Mr. Smith started with WRAL.
