N.C. students among winners in national science meet

Three North Carolina high school students won scholarships Monday in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

NEW YORK — Three North Carolina high school students won scholarships Monday in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Yekaterina "Katie" Shpanskaya, a home-schooled student from Raleigh, and Neil Shah, a senior at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, finished second in the team competition and will split a $50,000 scholarship. They linked numerous computers together to analyze data produced by a simulation of a nuclear fusion reactor.

Lenair Lett of Henderson, a senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, finished fourth in the individual competition and won a $30,000 scholarship. A diabetic, he examined a specific protein's potential to improve therapeutic methods for treating diabetes.
