Durham City Manager Tom Bonfield appointed a deputy Wednesday to focus coordinate the many city departments that perform “outreach services.” The city announced that Garaland Keith Chadwell was hired as deputy city manager for Community Building.

Chadwell was most recently city manager of Pompano Beach, Fla. He has also worked in Fulton County, Ga., Washington, D.C., and Virginia Beach, Va. He is scheduled to start his job in Durham in mid-September.

Chadwell will lead the departments of City/County Planning, City/County Inspections, Human Relations, Community Development, Neighborhood Improvement Services and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

Bonfield said, “While he has worked in the areas that he will oversee, he also understands how each department works collaboratively to support the community. That experience is vital, not just for the community, but also the work of other city departments.”
