Durham police are collecting school supplies for needy students this weekend.

Bring donations of book bags, pocket folders, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, markers, crayons, glue or glue sticks, dull-tip scissors, rulers, index cards, calculators, erasers and 3-ring binders to Walmart, 1525 Glenn School Road, on Friday from 1 to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All items collected will be distributed at the Back to School Festival Aug. 15 at CCB Plaza, 201 N. Corcoran Street in downtown Durham.

The festival, from noon to 3 p.m., will feature music, games, food, prizes, dance competitions and resources for youths.

Hurray for the police!

When children have school supplies and know that the community encourages their success, they may be less likely to encounter the police under less pleasant circumstances.

Now, what can we do about getting rid of the stigma about free and reduced meals at schools so that children from poor families can be well nourished?

And what can we do about making eight hours of sleep a cool thing to do---at home?
