Durham schools leader named regional superintendent of the year

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Carl Harris has been named the 2010 Central Carolina Regional Superintendent of the Year, the school system announced Tuesday.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham Public Schools Superintendent Carl Harris has been named the 2010 Central Carolina Regional Superintendent of the Year, the school system announced Tuesday.

He is now a nominee for North Carolina Superintendent of the Year.

"At DPS, his focus is on advancing academic achievement, fostering relationships with parents, businesses and the community and improving school administrative leadership," said Lawrence Walker, executive director of the Central Regional Educational Service Alliance.

The Central Region is a 15-member district composed of the following school districts: Caswell, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Johnston, Nash-Rocky Mount, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake, Warren and Wilson.

Harris became Durham's superintendent on July 1, 2006. He previously served as deputy superintendent.
