Durham, N.C. — Chester Luther Jenkins, the first African-American to serve as mayor of Durham, died Tuesday.
Arrangements are being handled by Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home. A memorial service is planned for Monday at Union Baptist Church, 904 Roxboro St. in Durham. Visitation is at noon. The service is at 1 p.m.
Jenkins, 71, was mayor for one term, beginning in 1989, after eight years on the city council.

I my experience, Chester was always a gentleman.
Among other accomplishments, he was one of several who were instrumental in helping to bring the ballpark to downtown Durham, in spite of opposition. It has proven to be an important part of the revitalization of downtown Durham.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
