Durham mourns passing of first black mayor

Chester Luther Jenkins, the first African-American to serve as mayor of Durham, died Tuesday.

DURHAM, N.C. — Chester Luther Jenkins, the first African-American to serve as mayor of Durham, died Tuesday.

Arrangements are being handled by Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home. A memorial service is planned for Monday at Union Baptist Church, 904 Roxboro St. in Durham. Visitation is at noon. The service is at 1 p.m.

Jenkins, 71, was mayor for one term, beginning in 1989, after eight years on the city council.
