<b>SMITHFIELD, N.C.</b> — Johnston Community College on Wednesday named David Johnson as the college’s third president.

Johnson succeeds Donald L. Reichard, who is retiring after 10 years heading the college. A provost at Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville, Va., Johnson will assume his new duties on July 1.

Johnson has 15 years of experience at various community colleges in Virginia. He received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Campbell University in 1979, a master’s in divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1984 and a doctorate in education from North Carolina State University in 1991.

Johnston Community College is the 16th-largest campus in the state community college system, and it experienced a record enrollment this year of more than 20,000 students.

Johnson’s hiring is contingent upon approval by the State Board of Community Colleges.
