Letter carriers collect over 300,000 pounds for Food Bank

— Area letter carriers helped collect non-perishable food donations in an effort to fight hunger during the 17th Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive.

“Stamp Out Hunger," is the nation’s largest one-day effort to fight hunger, more than 300,000 pounds of food were collected to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, with branches in Durham, Greenville, Raleigh, Sandhills (Southern Pines) and Wilmington.

Donations this year were up by almost 60,000 pounds over last year. The May 9 food drive provided more than 257,000 meals.

    Even more would have been received had thieves not gone through the mailboxes in some neighborhoods first.

    Still...if they're hungry, sending prayers for all.

    The donation included a half a case of SPAM(tm) and other canned goods from my family. Hopefully they will go to some needy families.
