A student from Raleigh is one of three statewide and 141 total to be named 2009 Presidential Scholars.
Winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, students have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, and community service.
Patrick J. Short, a senior at Jesse O. Sanderson High School, will travel to Washington, D.C., in June to accept the award.
Other North Carolina winners come from Charlotte and Greensboro. Annually, one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are chosen, along with 15 chosen at-large and 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
