RALEIGH, N.C. — April 6 is a birthday of sorts for North Carolina.

King Charles II signed the Carolina Charter on this date in 1663, granting the land that would become North and South Carolina to eight of the men who helped finance his rise to the throne.

According to the charter, which is on display at the North Carolina Archives on Jones Street in Raleigh, the eight men could "have, use, exercise and enjoy ... the colony."
