FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville Fire Department on Thursday received more than $2.1 million in federal funds to hire firefighters, officials said.

Fayetteville received the funds through the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Rescue Emergency Response program, or SAFER.

The city had to provide more than $2.3 million to match the grant. Officials said they hope to get the firefighters hired by May.

Fayetteville has implemented a hiring freeze because of a tight budget, meaning the additional firefighters wouldn't have possible without the federal grant.
