David S. Cooper, an assistant district attorney in Orange and Chatham counties, takes over Feb. 1 as clerk of Chatham County's Superior Court, Senior Resident Judge Carl Fox announced Tuesday.

Cooper, a Chatham native, also has been an assistant district attorney in Onslow County, a magistrate in Guilford County, an instructor at Coastal Carolina Community College and worked in private practice. Cooper also has international experience as a rule-of-law liaison in Latvia, a regional anti-corruption adviser in Thailand and a senior justice-sector adviser in Indonesia, Fox said.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Campbell University Law School, Cooper succeeds Janice Oldham, who held the clerk's post for more than 30 years.
