Want to be a zoo vet for a day?

e-mail print friendly

The North Carolina Zoological Society is holding a contest that will enable a member of the public to be a zoo veterinarian for a day.

The Zoo Society, the non-profit support organization for the North Carolina Zoo, will sell 900 tickets at $10 each for the Jan. 30 drawing that will determine the winner.

The winning ticket holder, along with a friend, will spend a day with N.C. Zoo Senior Veterinarian Dr. Ryan DeVoe.

The morning rounds will take the winner behind the scenes to watch some procedures, which may include annual exams, radiographs or surgery on lions, bears, zebras or similar exotic animals.

After sharing lunch with the vet staff, the winner and a guest will join DeVoe on his afternoon rounds among a variety of zoo animals.

All proceeds from the contest will help support the N.C. Zoo’s Conservation Medicine Programs. Participants must be 16 years old to enter.

The Zoo Society will work with the winner to select a convenient date in February or March to shadow DeVoe. Tickets are available at www.nczoo.com or by calling 336-879-7250.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

I admire their creativity. But, like public schools, they need to beg for funds...reminds me of the bumper sticker:

"It will be a great day when schools get all the money they need and the military has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber."

This is a good way for the Zoo to make extra money! I'd love to win this. Sounds fun!! They should do it more than once a year if this turns out well.

Will WRAL follow up on this worthwhile story and tell us exactly HOW to be a part of the contest / auction? My wife has been a part of the Volunteer Neo-Natal team at the Zoo and loves it, would love this. Tell me how to buy chances, please! I don't use credit cards, so not on line if you can.
