Boy Scouts to hold flag-retirement ceremony

Posted December 5, 2008

— The Boy Scouts are inviting the public to join them in a ceremony to appropriately retire American flags Saturday in Wake Forest.

The ceremony will be held in the Wake Forest Park-and-Ride lot at Elm and White streets at 4:30 p.m. Members of the public are encouraged to bring any unserviceable U.S., state or other flags they wish to be retired.

The U.S. Flag Code states that a "flag, when it is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

The service is being organized by the Occoneechee Council – Neuse River District.

yep, what they said... I thought retiring a flag meant just burning it, but you should never burn an American Flag. This ceremoney is awesome.

If you've never seen this ceremony, it's worth the trip. Very moving.
