MANTEO, N.C. — The manatee which has entertained both residents and tourists over the past few weeks near Manteo has not died, a spokesman with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Wednesday.

Carl Jordan, Manteo dock master, said Tuesday that the mammal was found dead, but he was mistaken.

Manatees are generally warm water creatures more common in the waters off of Florida than the Outer Banks. They can not survive in waters cooler than 60 degrees, according to a specialist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The wildlife service did find a dead manatee in Pennsylvania, but believes the creatures swimming along the Outer Banks is still alive.
