Manatee, sighted in Manteo, has died

Posted November 11, 2008

— Manteo will have to say good-bye to the manatee which has entertained both residents and tourists over the past few weeks.

Carl Jordan, Manteo dock master, said Tuesday that the mammal was found dead.

Manatees are generally warm water creatures more common in the waters off of Florida than the Outer Banks. They can not survive in waters cooler than 60 degrees, according to a specialist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The cause of death for this manatee was not known.

I wonder why one of the NC aquariums did capture it and transport it back to Florida. It would have been great press for those organizations. But judging from the hue and cry already tuning up over the state budget, I would guess it's a matter of money.

It's ashamed that they couldn't capture it and transport it to warmer waters. Knowing this State and the Fed government there are probably laws prohibiting anyone from interfering with nature.

It's odd that it made it this far north. They were a common sight when I lived in Florida.
