Manatee, sighted in Manteo, has died

Manteo, N.C. — Manteo will have to say good-bye to the manatee which has entertained both residents and tourists over the past few weeks.
Carl Jordan, Manteo dock master, said Tuesday that the mammal was found dead.
Manatees are generally warm water creatures more common in the waters off of Florida than the Outer Banks. They can not survive in waters cooler than 60 degrees, according to a specialist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
The cause of death for this manatee was not known.
