RALEIGH, N.C. — A park dedication in Holly Springs Sunday afternoon continued a series of events honoring veterans across the Triangle before the national holiday Tuesday.

Holly Springs officials unveiled a 20-foot-long stone wall adorned with plaques representing the five branches of the military.

"We want to invite all veterans to come out," said Len Bradley, director of the town's parks and recreation department.

Holly Spring's Community Band played and Mayor Dick Sears spoke during the ceremony at Veterans Park, 600 Bikram Drive, at 4 p.m.

The 10-acre park, which opened this summer, features a pond, half-mile greenway loop, fitness and playground equipment, and a picnic shelter. The land was donated to the town by the developer of the Windcrest subdivision.

Veterans Day events continue Monday and Tuesday, including ceremonies with French government officials in Raleigh, an assembly of ROTC cadets and midshipmen in Chapel Hill, and a banquet featuring African-American World War II veterans.

On Saturday, about 6,000 people watched the North Carolina Veterans Parade in downtown Raleigh, and the 82nd Airborne's All American Chorus led the lineup of country stars at the Eighth of November concert in Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre.

Black Hawk helicopters flew over the Veterans Day parade in Fayetteville, which marked the 60th birthday of the Air Force.

This year's Veterans Day falls on the 90th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
