RALEIGH, N.C. — The city's first LED street lights will be installed downtown next Tuesday, officials said.

Mayor Charles Meeker and Lloyd Yates, president and chief executive of Progress Energy Carolinas, will help install some of the light-emitting diode fixtures in street lamps along Davie Street outside the utility's headquarters.

Progress Energy and the city partnered to test the energy-saving LEDs in various applications. The devices feature lamps developed by Durham-based Cree Inc.

After studying how the LEDs operate under daily conditions, city officials will meet with Progress Energy managers to determine whether the technology should be expanded in Raleigh.
