Hoke sheriff sponsors gas discount

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin plans to give hundreds of area drivers a break on filling up their gas tanks on Friday.

Peterkin said he would kick in $1 per gallon toward the cost of up to 10 gallons of gas at the Shell station at 5609 Fayetteville Road. The event will begin at 7 a.m. Friday and will be available to the first 400 drivers.

The sheriff said he raised the money for the event through donations and wanted to help Hoke County residents hurt by the slow economy. He said he initially planned to donate 30 cents a gallon to drivers' costs, but lower gas prices in recent days allowed him to bump his donation up to $1 per gallon.
