Raleigh students lead in cancer fundraiser

More than 50,000 students in 69 North Carolina public schools collected $128,652 in the three-week fundraiser. Students were asked to put their pocket change in collection jars in their classrooms.

"We are so proud of the enthusiasm and support these students passionately bring to the Olive Garden Pasta for Pennies program each year," said Dave Pickens, president of the restaurant company. "Their generous efforts continue to make a significant impact in their communities and a difference in the lives of families throughout the nation."

Three Raleigh schools were among the top fund raising schools in eastern North Carolina: Oak Grove Elementary School, with $7,908; West Millbrook Middle School, with $7,778; and Leesville Road Elementary School, with $6,713.

The Olive Garden gave a pasta party for the classroom that raised the most money at each school.

The donated money will got to support research into leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myelopma, as well as to provide critical services to patients and their families.

"We are inspired by the outpouring of compassion and commitment to our mission, and thank all the student participants and Olive Garden for another great campaign," said Tiffany Drummond Armstrong, executive director of the LLS Eastern North Carolina chapter.
