The North Carolina attorney general advised parents to put a priority on safety as the new school year begins.

The North Carolina attorney general advised parents to put a priority on safety as the new school year begins.

Attorney General Roy Cooper offered these tips:

Monitor lists to know when a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood. Sign up for e-mail alerts from the statewide registry.
Ask how teachers at your child's school are prepared for an emergency. Your school should also explain what your role as a parent is in a crisis.
Teacher your child to avoid strangers, both in person and online. Monitor your child's Internet activity and caution them about posting personal information and photos.
Ask how employees are screened at school, day care and after-school programs. Get to know the adults who interact with your child every day.
Make sure your school has an updated list of ways to contact you in an emergency.
Make sure your child knows his home address, parents' full names and phone numbers. Consider a non-driver identification card from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles for your child.
