The North Carolina attorney general advised parents to put a priority on safety as the new school year begins.

Attorney General Roy Cooper offered these tips:

  • Monitor lists to know when a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood. Sign up for e-mail alerts from the statewide registry.
  • Ask how teachers at your child's school are prepared for an emergency. Your school should also explain what your role as a parent is in a crisis.
  • Teacher your child to avoid strangers, both in person and online. Monitor your child's Internet activity and caution them about posting personal information and photos.
  • Ask how employees are screened at school, day care and after-school programs. Get to know the adults who interact with your child every day.
  • Make sure your school has an updated list of ways to contact you in an emergency.
  • Make sure your child knows his home address, parents' full names and phone numbers. Consider a non-driver identification card from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles for your child.
