Schools get free weather radios
The federal government is funding a program to provide Public Alert Radios to almost 200,000 schools nationwide this fall.
Posted — UpdatedIt is the second phase of a plan which previously gave radios to every K-12 public school in the country. Non-public schools, preschools and Head Start programs and post-secondary schools are the primary beneficiaries in this round.
The radios alert school personnel to emergencies such as severe weather, hazardous material leaks and Amber Alerts.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security with assistance from the departments of Education and Health and Human Services. Radios are distributed by the Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
