— Thomson Reuters ranks Rex Healthcare among the top hospitals in the country in a list released Monday.

Thomson Reuters graded hospitals over five years on patient safety, clinical success and financial performance. Rex was one of 20 large community hospitals recognized.

“Our co-workers’ daily focus on quality, patient safety and satisfaction propelled Rex to receive this recognition," said David Strong, president of Rex Healthcare.

The Jessica Santillan tragic was extremely unfortunate and a horrible situation. Every year, there are 100,000 fatal medical errors that occur, a majority of which never make the news. I would bet that at many of the top hospitals, either determined by Thomson Reuters or US News and World Report or others, fatal medical errors have occurred at one point in the recent past. In fact, I am aware of one situation that a friend recently went through involving a huge medical error at Rex that nearly lead to her newborn baby's death.

Also what never makes the news are all the medical miracles Duke and other top hospital perform every day. Often it is only until someone famous (Sen Kennedy) has a successful procedure performed that we hear these good stories.

Goduke- you're right... that happened at A duke hospital, not THE Duke Hospital, and it was 4 years ago.
The Jesica Santillan tragedy, however, took place at Duke University Hospital. I realize that happened 5 years ago, and that these lists come out annually... but I don't think there's a statute of limitations on lethal incompetence, and I question the validity of a list that includes this hospital among the best in the country.

EdTeach - That happened 4 years ago. These rankings are determined annually. Plus, it is Duke Hospital that made the rankings, not the hospitals within the health system where the hydraulic fluid accident occurred.

Duke "we think your innards would work better with a coating of elevator hydraulic fluid" Hospitals made the list?
Sort of makes the whole thing suspect, in my humble...

    Duke also made this list
