RALEIGH, N.C. — Veterinarians and engineers teamed up at North Carolina State University to test a special surgery.

Cassidy, a 5-year-old shepherd-mix from Long Island, N.Y., is missing her right rear leg. The dog inspired the veterinary school to develop a leg that could be integrated into his skeleton.

Cassidy underwent the surgery Thursday morning. The surgery went well.

In a few months, the dog will be back in town once the implant takes hold, so the doctors can attach his new leg.
