N.C. Zoo photographer wins spot in Smithsonian

Zoo photographer's award-winning shot

An employee of the North Carolina Zoo has earned a place in the Smithsonian Museum for a photograph he took in Arizona.

Tom Gillespie is a photojournalist and public affairs specialist at the zoo.

The photo he took of a Navajo guide standing by his horse awaiting visitors to Monument Valley was one of the top images submitted for Smithsonian magazine’s fifth annual photo contest.

The image will be on display at the Smithsonian "Castle" on the National Mall through Jan. 15, 2009.

Gillespie, of Trinity, has also had his work featured in North Carolina magazine.
