State trooper receives heroism award

Posted July 22, 2008

— A North Carolina state trooper received an award for heroism Tuesday morning for rescuing hostages inside a Jacksonville Wal-Mart earlier this year.

Trooper Chris J. Matos apprehended an armed man who took several employees hostage on March 23. He got the suspect to surrender and was able to arrest him.

Matos has served with the patrol for about five years. He received a similar honor less than two months ago.

Tuesday's ceremony was held at the Charlie Rose Agriculture building on East Mount Drive in Fayetteville.

Congrats! I agree with all of the comments commending someone for a job well done. The SHP has gotten a much undeserved bad rap as of late. Good to see some good press for a change.

It is good to read about people doing good things for a change, and to see him get an award by his superiors. There are many good things that people do every day but mostly only the bad news gets reported. Thanks to all the Law Enforcement officers for protecting us citizens, and for being willing to put your life on the line for people you don't even know.

I wonder why we didn't hear about this until now. I would have written a letter to him thanking him for his outstanding service!

Thank you for what you do. As the wife of a trooper, I know the everyday risks you take when you sign on for work. Keep up the good work and stay safe while on the roads.
