RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Board of Transportation awarded $391,750 Friday to 16 municipalities planning to improve conditions for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

Albemarle got $31,850; Banner Elk, $24,800; Beaufort, $28,000; Belmont, $24,000; Bessemer City, $24,800; Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, $31,500; Hildebran, $20,000; Jamestown, $24,000; Locust, $20,000; Marshville, $20,000; Old Fort, $24,800; Pembroke, $20,000; Pine Knoll Shores, $20,000; Rocky Mount, $30,000; Sanford, $28,000 and Yadkinville, $20,000.

The grants are not tied to specific projects, rather are designed to expand overall bicycle and pedestrian opportunities within a given community.
