Culinary experts to compete in Raleigh

Culinary instructors and students from across North Carolina and professionals from other states in the southeast will be in Raleigh next week to compete for the "Golden Wisk" award at the Wake Tech Culinary Arts Showcase.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Culinary instructors and students from across North Carolina and professionals from other states in the southeast will be in Raleigh next week to compete for the "Golden Wisk" award at the Wake Tech Culinary Arts Showcase.

Competitors will compete in a closed session on Monday, where judges from the American Culinary Federation will select award winners for cold foods, pastries and showpieces. On Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., the public will be allowed to view the award-winning entries and watch a live, two-hour Showpiece Challenge.

Several culinary experts from Wake Tech joined WRAL Thursday morning to give a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the pastry creations are made.

High school students from at least three North Carolina counties will compete in a cake decorating competition as well.

Wake Tech instructors and students will present a live ice-carving demonstration, and will offer demonstrations on how to work with sugar fondant and how to carve fruits and vegetables for centerpieces and garnishes.

Hands-on decorating fun for kids and a silent auction of “foodie” favorites will round out the event. Visitors will be able to taste samples from some of the Triangle’s top restaurants, and there will be live music.
