Lena Hu of Chapel Hill was selected Thursday by National Geographic Kids as a member of the Hands-On-Explorer Challenge expedition team. Hu, 14, is one of 15 winners out of over 1,000 submissions.

The Hands-On-Explorer Challenge aims to inspire the next generation of National Geographic Explorers. Team members will travel to Montana in July with several National Geographic staff members. The group will explore the Missouri River, trace the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and participate in an archaeological dig for dinosaur bones.

Team members were selected based upon their submitted photos and essays that demonstrated a passion for exploration.

That is soooo awesome!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! Lena. Being privileged to walk in NG's golden rectangle can absolutely change your life. . . you will meet truly awesome friends for life --- experience "wonder"-filled, life-changing events --- know that your life will be blessed and make you grateful for all you will experience. I had the opportunity to offer a young NC student the participation in Project Marco Polo III (Egypt, Suez Canal/eastern Mediterranean onboard USNS Chauvenet, Greece) several years ago that was absolutely one of the best experiences of this student and teacher's life. ENJOY!
