The state Department of Transportation has approved construction of a bridge over Interstate 40 that will connect sections of the American Tobacco Trail, Durham officials said Wednesday.

Construction on the bridge, which will be adjacent to the Streets at Southpoint mall, is expected to begin this summer and be completed by the middle of 2013, officials said.

The 22-mile trail, which cuts through Durham, Chatham and Wake counties, is popular with joggers, bicyclists and families.

I hate the one behind my house. It turned out to be no more than a criminal highway to get to your backyards. The police never patrol them either.

Over I-40 not exactly like bridging NC64. No place to discard a water bottle. This is like the Silver Comet Trail in Cobb Co GA.

DOT can save money by moving the walking bridge over 147 entering Durham to the Southpoint Mall area. That is where the priority to build a bridge should have been all along.

All of the fuss over a close-knit “neighborhood” having been split by 147 was just special interest babble. I have been by the 147 bridge at least twice a day since it was built (except weekends). To date I have seen 4 people on it – all of them at the same time. And…. they looked lost.

I don’t live in the Southpoint area but folks over there should be furious that they have had to cross the intersection at Fayetteville Street when biking and walking while the bridge on 147 – the one that we all knew would not get used - sits empty.

Cool

About time, it only took 10 years!
