Businesses along Durham's 9th Street saw traffic of a different sort Saturday when bicycle riders and fans converged on the neighborhood between Duke University's east and west campuses for a day of racing.
The Ninth Street Derby featured a series of races for riders of various ability levels from beginners as young as 6 years old to professionals racing at up to 35 mph.
Streets were closed throughout the day as amateurs and pros rode a half-mile loop on Ninth, Perry, Iredell and Markham streets.
College riders representing Duke, NC State, UNC, ECU, Appalachian State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia and the US Naval Academy circled the route 50 times in a 25-mile race, vying for the Atlantic Collegiate Cycling Conference title.
