SANFORD, N.C. — A Sanford home construction company is turning to social media to help children find presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
Homes by Vanderbilt is donating $5 to Toys for Tots for every "like" its Facebook page receives.

"I might be a little bit older, but even I see the power and the scope of the Facebook community," Homes by Vanderbuilt owner Tom Van de Reit said. "So when the time came to pick the most potent and efficient vehicle to reach the largest amount of people in the shortest amount of time, the answer was an easy one."

Van de Reit said he read in his local paper that the Sanford Toys-For-Tots was in unusually desperate need this holiday season, and he wanted to make sure that bad economic times didn't keep children from having a good Christmas.

"Every child in Lee County should have something under the tree this year and a smile on their face Christmas morning. No exceptions," he said.

Facebook offers a way to get the community involved as well, Van de Reit said.

"It has been our experience over our many years here in the Sanford area that the people here are very giving and genuinely care for their neighbors. Accordingly, we felt this exercise should include all of us," he said.

Homes by Vanderbilt hopes to reach at least 500 likes by Dec. 20 and donate up to $2,500 to Toys for Tots.
