— A local small-business owner who started a relationship with the Cumberland Community Foundation with a $10,000 gift bequeathed $10 million to the organization for future programs, the Philanthropy Journal reported Wednesday.

The anonymous donation is the largest ever for the youth-development program and will bring its total assets to $58 million.

"This is a man who was very generous," Holmes says. "He had a long history of making large gifts directly to organizations in the community, mainly focused on education."

Foundation Executive Director Mary Holmes said the donor developed a system for investing in the stock market that made him wealthy. Over time, he gave more than $6 million to schools and charities to support educational causes, Holmes said.

Over the next 25 years, the foundation estimates, $17 million in scholarships funded with investment income from the endowment gift will be awarded to nearly 1,000 graduating seniors from Cumberland County high schools.

Awesome. Great contribution to the education of young people. As said before hopefully the individuals who received the scolarships will someday themselves give back to the community. Wouldn't that be great.

Thank you Anonymous Donor! Hopefully the recipients will give back themselves one day! People helping people not Gov't handouts is the way to go!

Awesome, feel-good story. Why is this article not in large headline print across the top of the website instead of in small print at the bottom? Oh, I know why: It's not bad news. :/

To abrcromben: I know all about these programs and I have 2 dogs thank you, I donate what I can also when I can. I am well aware of all of this already but don't you think just making a comment like this might make someone think of animals too? Maybe they have not even thought about animals just these other organizations. This is the only reason I stated this. Believe ME IF I HAD THE MONEY, I WOULD DO MORE but THANKS FOR NOT BASHING ME and I HOPE THIS WAS NOT MEANT TO BASH ME for stating this becasue I didn't mean for it to sound like that. I just wish people who really did have all this money would also think of animals that you and I know cannot help themselves at all.

I have a hard time equating human education to a shelter for dogs.

Lets think of human beings first ok. If anyone has money please give it to humans. I don't live in that county, but thankyou for giving that money it is much needed in any county.
