The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive at the Wake County Detention Center on Wednesday morning.

Around 5:30 a.m., detention officers found Jeffrey Paul Paske unresponsive in his cell. Detention officers and medical staff attempted life-saving measures and EMS was called. Paske was pronounced dead shortly after. He was 34 years old.

The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

The SBI is investigating, which is standard for an in-custody death. The SBI will then report their findings to the Wake County District Attorney. 

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting its own internal investigation.
