Authorities on Saturday are investigating the death of an inmate at the Durham County Detention Center.
According to the Durham County Sheriff's Office, detention officers found 47-year-old Kenneth Lamont McNeil unresponsive in his cell around 4 a.m. The sheriff's office said the jail's medical staff tried performing life-saving measures, but then he died at the jail.

The office said that McNeil was a Durham resident and had been detained since March 15, 2025 on 12 failure to appear charges for various breaking and entering, larceny, assault and other misdemeanor offenses alleged that occurred in 2023.
In November, he was indicted on one count of breaking and entering and one count of larceny after breaking and entering.
The office said his death did not appear to be a suicide and as required by law, is under review by the medical examiner who will determine the cause.
Authorities have not identified the inmate or his cause of death, but said the State Bureau of Investigations and Durham County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
