Police: Dead man found on West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill identified

The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a dead body found on West Franklin Street Thursday afternoon.

At 11:10 a.m., a Chapel Hill police officer working downtown on foot patrol discovered a dead man in the 300 block of W. Franklin St. This street has many popular shops and restaurants that are regularly visited by students, locals and visitors. Police did not say if anyone else saw the body. 

On Friday, police identified the man as 53-year-old Charles Williams Jr. They said his death did not appear to be suspicious. 

The department said an investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time.
