Trading a reporter's notepad for a chef's hat

First let me tell you about our Mission Team. We’re traveling with our Pastor, Taylor Mills. The rest of the Avent Ferry UMC family making up the team are Michael Lester, Benson Kirkman, Diane Corbin, Lori Drum, Drew Grimes, Ann Yount and Rob & Jessica Anastes. You’ll hear more about Rob in a moment.

On my first day on the ground in D’Iberville, I traded in my reporter's notepad for a chef’s hat. When I was assigned kitchen duty, since I was flying in a day later than the rest of the team, I thought I’d be helping out in the kitchen. Turns out, I was the cook for the day for 21 people. Imagine my shock and awe at the thought of feeding that many people.

Pastor Taylor and I put our heads together and came up with a menu – burgers and baked potatoes. However, I needed something memorable since I was following Rob in the cooking rotation. You see, we all suspect Rob was a chef in another life. He’s a great cook. That’s when I decided to make my homemade Chocolate Chip-Pecan cookies with cranberries. And just in case you’re wondering, the treats were a hit. We are sharing the week with another team of 10 people from Michigan, and everyone ate heartily.

Dinner was the end of an exhausting day for the team. We are doing finishing work on the home of a disabled Veteran who now gets around on a motorized scooter. A FEMA trailer has been Cheryl Lewis’ only shelter since Hurricane Katrina hit. She tells our team she’s been ordered to vacate the trailer by the first of May. So, we’re trying to do as much as we can to help her move into her new house.

I get to meet Ms. Lewis for the first time Tuesday, but I got to know her a little bit from the stories the team shared from their first day on the job. We did an exercise during devotion where Pastor Taylor asked us to finish this sentence, “Where did you see God today”? Lori Drum said, “I saw God on a Scooter. Ann Yount said, “I saw God sweeping on a scooter.” I can’t wait to meet Ms. Lewis!

What a great witness! God bless you and your church family during this time of fellowship with the families affected by Katrina! I bet a bath felt so good after all that dust! Take Care.

Great work Ken. I went to Gulfport, Mississippi in the spring of 2005 with a group of high school students and saw the destruction with my own eyes. The images on tv didn't tell the entire story. We spent a week with the clean-up effort and talked to people who actually experienced the destruction. I will never forget that trip. God bless you and your church.

I like the question: "where did you see God today". On a mission trip I went on this past summer the speaker spoke about "it moments" which where when you could really feel God's presence. It was really great to hear all of the other teens stories throughout the week. God is simply amazing.

Ken- I think your mission sounds very uplifting and I applaud you and your team for taking on this unfortunately necessary task. My family and I wish you well on your trip, but look forward to your return and seeing you again on the Big 5...
